A game where the action is driven by card play. The term can be narrowly applied to games that have followed the original CDG, Mark Herman's We the People (subsequently reworked and publish as Washington's War). In these games, but players get a hand of cards which give them an opportunity to play events or use points to move units on the map. Games like Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage and Paths of Glory are built in this mode.

More broadly, some people use CDGs to describe any game powered by card play. Using this wider definition, the scope includes games like Twilight Struggle, Combat Commander, and Up Front.
